Kellen Finishes 6th at USRA Modified Winter Meltdown

Kellen Chadwick charged to a 6th place finish on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Southern New Mexico's USRA Modified Winter Meltdown. Kellen started the event 17th, after earning a transfer spot from Sunday's B Main to the feature. Kellen would have earned the hard charger award had it been awarded for this event, as he gained the most spots during the event. During Friday and Saturday's preliminary events, Kellen was working to find the right setup on his car, while earning A Main starts both nights. On Sunday, Kellen made some small adjustments and the car was dialed in. Early in the feature, Kellen was patiently working his way towards the front. Kellen was able to race by some strong contenders in his charge to the front, including Las Cruces ace Bumper Jones and Fall Nationals winner Rodney Sanders. Kellen's run had him all the way up to 5th with 4 laps to go but a slip up coming to the white flag allowed Jeff Taylor to slip back into 5th, moving Kellen back to 6th. "If I could have found the setup earlier in the weekend, I might have had a shot," Kellen said. "I could have had a starting spot inside the top 10, which would have allowed me to be closer to the leaders." Still, his run was strong and Kellen was pleased with the efforts at one of the prestigious Modified events anywhere. Finishing 6th out of 63 cars, including many stars from the USMTS and other standouts is something to be proud of. The top 5 in front of Kellen were winner Terry Phillips, Johnny Scott, Jason Krohn, Tommy Meyer and Taylor (all of which are USMTS regulars).
Next up for Kellen will be the World Modified Dirt Track Championship to be held at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN on April 5 - 9, 2011. The event pays $20,000 to the winner and is expected to draw more than 160 cars, including all of the stars of the USMTS and other national standouts. Kellen Suffers Tough Break In Elma
Kellen Chadwick made his way to Elma, Washington to compete in the 11th Annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals. Kellen is a former 2 time winner of the event. Kellen was asked to drive a car owned by Canadian driver Sir Lawrence O'Connor. O'Connor had purchased a car that had previously won the Nationals two times. This year, he asked Kellen to wheel the car and see if he could get a third win out of it. Kellen did well on Friday night's qualifying night. He timed in 12th quickest of the 67 cars. Ran good in his first heat but had some bad luck in his second. When the night was done, he had earned a spot in Saturday's feature.
Unfortunately, he would not have good luck on Saturday. Starting 7th in the 24 car field, Kellen knew that he had 40 laps to try to make his way to the front. Unfortunately, on the first green flag lap, Kellen checked up for a car that got loose and was hit from behind, causing him to spin. Kellen made sure to spin the car just off the surface, hoping to avoid being collieded into. As he sat in the field, just a few feet off the racing surface, Kellen waited for a caution to fly, so he could rejoin the race from the back. Unfortunately, the track officials did not throw the caution. Instead, Kellen was going laps down. At the next caution, Kellen learned that he was many laps down. He took the car to the pits, ending his hopes of winning a 3rd Northwest Nationals.
Kellen Chadwick Has Tough Weekend In Calistoga
Kellen Chadwick and the crew headed to Calistoga Speedway over Memorial Day weekend to compete at the historic racing facility. On Saturday, Kellen's night ended prematurely, as another drive hit the right rear of his car, sending the rear end airborn in his heat race. After surverying the damage, the team realized that the rear end of the car was bent, in addition to the other damage sustained in the wreck. He would sit out the remainder of the night.
On Sunday, things were looking better. Kellen was able to win his heat race and would start on the pole of the 20 lap feature. Kellen quickly grabbed the lead in the feature and opened a comfortable lead over Nick DeCarlo and great friend Ryan McDaniel. A caution erased his lead and McDaniel was now on his rear bumper. After putting on an exciting battle for the lead over several laps, McDaniel was able to motor by and go on to win. Kellen would end up fourth.
